“I’m not ready to go home. And I’m telling you I’m not going.” - Jessica Sanchez

Jessica Sanchez’ American Idol journey is the point in her early life when people, of all walks of life from all over the world, saw how ‘unbelievable’ and ‘other worldly’ her voice (talent) is, it’s something that’s definitely beyond her age (no kidding, she's just actually 16 years old). It’s where she had a firsthand experience of how hateful ‘other’ people can be. And it’s where she showed that her fight is not yet going to end after her nearly downfall in the competition.

There are quite a few people who were saying, especially after her last solo standing ovation Everybody Has A Dream, that there was a decline in her performances, given her ‘unexpected’ and ‘quite’ weird song choices. I know that my opinion doesn't really matter but, personally speaking, she is consistent.

It’s obvious that even in her underrated performances, she was still good. I mean, did it ever come to a moment where she basically ruined a song? NO.

I read somewhere that Jessica is just saving her ‘guns’ and somehow she will unleash it soon. There’s a tiny bit of truth there. She has not only one but a couple of things under her sleeves. I’m sure of it. But the question for some is, was that ever the case? NO. Why? When I was going through all her songs in Idol, I noticed several things. First, during the first part, every other week, she would sing up-tempo songs. I think she was trying to balance it by not singing ballads (or ‘boring’ songs as others will call it) every week. With that, people would not accuse her of singing the same songs over and over again, these songs that would bore them to death if they listen to it pretty much every performance night.

Now, we go to the song that she chose which almost ended her Idol journey. I don’t know why she picked that song. I don’t care if I will not get the answer to that question. But that was such a risk that she took. It was really courageous in her part. Her dramatic save was totally an eye-opener. Her supporters realized that they should not be complacent. From then on, they would vote so hard like there’s no tomorrow. See, that was a good thing. And that also made Jessica wake up from an over-relaxing sleep.

Due to what happened, some people say that she just lost her chance to win the title this year because among those who got saved, NO ONE made it to the Finale and won the whole thing. When I read that, I actually got furious. I believed that even though they have facts, it was wrong to base that early prediction in connection to her save. So, I didn’t lose my hope. It’s still possible. And we’re going to prove them wrong. And she will make another history in American Idol.

During the second part, where the contestants would sing at least two songs, I saw another pattern. The other song would be upbeat while the other one isn’t. And the reason why she did this is just like the reason I pointed out at the beginning of this.

The judges’ issue about Jessica’s performances in these performances was the lack of emotions (or connection) on the songs. I know that she did well vocally. I understood the judges. So, the missing piece in the puzzle should be filled up, to make it complete.

It was obvious that Jessica took their advice. She started to pour those feelings in the songs. When she did that, you could really feel it when she was singing. And we have to admit that it would make us cry like never before. But still, she has yet to have that MOMENT again. Her last standing ovation was with Joshua, when they sang I Knew You Were Waiting For Me. I wrote a separate post about this before that she needs to shine again...that performance that would gain her another standing ovation from the judges and from the people. It’s already time.

You know what, I’ve learned to expect the unexpected from Jessica but I had a feeling that she would do something ASTOUNDING this week because it is a very crucial one. It was a do or die for her. After her first performance this week, Steal Away by Etta James, I think it’s safe to say that we longed for more. Before her second performance of the night, honestly, I wasn’t paying any attention to what Jimmy Iovine was saying the whole time. I’ve got to admit, I programmed my ears to just focus on Jessica. When she said “I’m here to stay”, it got my full attention. I grinned. I had a hunch that it will not stop there. Then, “I’m not ready to go home. And I’m telling you I’m not going.” (By the way, she looked cute when she said it. I loved that part.) She’s absolutely serious. I knew from the moment when she uttered those words that she will FINALLY KILL IT like she never did before.

I was right.

She very much felt And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going (by Jennifer Holliday) more than what millions of us felt. As Jennifer Lopez' was telling her something like "it probably was just ripping your soul apart", when you look closely, we saw those tears fell from Jessica's eyes. And it was so heartbreaking that it actually happened (I'm not numb to ignore it. Like most, I cried. End of story.) right before the (our) eyes of the public. That performance was a DEFINING moment for her…that song was not taken literally especially when you look at the lyrics. She went way beyond that. And the message was so powerful that it pretty much blew and captivated our hearts and souls away. Her voice when she sang it....that fierce look on her eyes, the way she just stood there...the angst....and her CONVICTION.

It was not surprising to hear other people say that they literally cried after her performance of that song. Finally, after a long time, she got the very much deserved standing ovation that was evading her for the past weeks. That ‘moment’ that I was talking about before, which she really needed, was right there with that song. The audience was on their feet, and so were the judges. And you know what? It was evident that they were all at shock that it took quite some time to recover and be back to their normal selves. When that happened, they totally realized that she is putting up a great fight and she’s still there. They got her message clearly.

I agree with what Jennifer Lopez said regarding how Jessica just stood there. Just look at this way, if she moved around the stage we wouldn't see what we witnessed from her. As her movements were minimal, it allowed her to release all those feelings stored up inside, to be released through her voice. That was a great idea. And notice that this phrase “You’ll gonna love me” in the song was basically directed to those people who have nothing good to say and think about Jessica…these particular people who are just negative towards her and who don’t believe on what she can do. “I’m not gonna leave you. There’s no way I will. And I am telling you, I’m not going. No no no way, no no no way I’m leaving without you. I’m not leaving without you. I don’t wanna be free. I’m staying…” Take that American Idol Season 11 title, Jessica’s determined to WIN it.

Going back to what she said before that show-stopping and breathtaking (and emotional) And I Am Telling You I Am Not Going performance, I remembered when she got all teary-eyed before it was announced to her that she got in the Top 24 of American Idol. When Jennifer Lopez asked her why she was crying Jessica answered, “I want this so bad.” That made the slightest impact on me. And then, during the Top 13, on the 60 seconds segment, one of the questions was what her three wishes are. The first one is to meet Eminem, then to make the world a better place and lastly, “to win American Idol”.

Seriously, Jessica has the voice, and now she has the feelings, and not to mention her inspirations and motivations. The push that she needs is already there. The universe and its stars have fallen into place. Her destiny is written all over. She can MAKE it. We can DO this TOGETHER. All the way to the Finale… HOLD ON until the American Idol title this year is in Jessica’s hands. Always keep in mind to vote not only hundreds but thousands of times. Don’t be complacent. And, most importantly, PRAY.
