Breakdown, Recap: Christina Grimmie's Snow White music video | "Let Your Feet Follow Your Heart"

“Let your feet follow your heart.”

I remember last February when Christina Grimmie was in Dallas, Texas. She was excited to share on her Younow stream about the music videos that they were filming. It was during this streaming that her EP Side A was released. 

That was six months ago. Now, two months since she went home to be with the Lord, the first of the four music videos for what is called The Ballad of Jessica Blue has been released. Her family, thankfully, decided to share the videos as a celebration of Christina's music, her passion. August would be a Christina Grimmie month as every Thursday each of the music videos will be uploaded in her YouTube channel.

The first song from her EP is Snow White. It's my favorite other than Without Him. Chances are, you have already watched it. I'm going to recap and break the music video down for you. I'm also going to review it. I'll try not to be biased. Without so much ado, let's start the discussion.

It's evident while I was watching her in this video that she looks so alive. I got the same good vibes that she normally exudes across the screen. I could also see the light that she has every time. I suggest that you prepare your heart for a ride. I barely handled mine. (I might record a video version of this recap/breakdown/review. It depends. Just because not all of us can read this until the very end.)

The music video begins with the butter and Bobby conversation: whether or not it was him who put those butter up there. We get a glimpse of Christina's sense of humor here.

Friend 1: "It was Bobby." 

Jessica: "Bobby is a vegan and that’s real butter up there. He probably break out in a protein rash or something."

Friend 1: "All the more reason for Bobby to want them gone."

Jessica: "Nah. Bobby is not cool enough to think of something like this."

Friend 1: "So, this is cool?"

Jessica: "Obviously. We’re into it."

*they both laugh

I love her laugh but I'm missing it. I don't think they ever figured out if it was really Bobby though :) And why the choice of that name? Is this Bobby somehow inspired by the real Bobby in Christina's life? Or maybe, none at all? Forgive me if I suddenly thought of this.

Then the conversation turns serious as they talk about Jessica's upcoming showcase. The transition is smooth, so far. Christina and her friend portray their characters pretty well. It seems really natural and not an obvious acting.

Friend 1: "So, how’s the writing for the showcase coming?"

Jessica: "Ah, I haven’t written in four days and the showcase is this Friday."

Friend 1: "That’s not good."

Jessica: "Yeah, it’s as bad as it gets."

Friend 1: "What’s up?"

Jessica: "I don’t know. Maybe, I’m just not ready."

Within 45 seconds, I love how it moved from a basic and 'petty' "butter-Bobby" conversation to struggles that we typically have a harder time to go through in life. The depth and artistry are slowly unraveling throughout this video.

*intro of Luke, the boyfriend

Both: "We’re closed."

Friend 1: "Dude, did you lock the door?"

Luke: "Hi Jess."

Jessica: "Hey Luke."

Luke: "Hey, uhm, I need to cancel dinner tonight and, uhm, we need to talk about your showcase, Friday."

Jessica: "You’re working tonight and you’re accepting the grant so you can’t come to my show on Friday."

Luke: "Yeah. Let’s talk about it, okay?"

*kisses Jess

*Luke leaves the place with another girl

Of course, we also have our own boy-problem. Add that to your self-discovery, figuring out your identity and the path you really want to take. Who says it is easy? 

Jessica: "So, that’s how that’s going."

Friend 1: "How was going? You guys are gonna talk, right? He’s a good guy."

Jessica: "Is he?"

Friend 1: "Well, is he? Give me the goods."

Jessica: "There’s nothing to give. I just think that he would be happier with someone else."

We all have that kind of friend who's more sensible or cerebral. The one who always gives you the best advice especially when you need it the most. Then, you also have another friend who just tags along.

*another friend enters

Friend 2: "You guys do know that we have chairs, couches even. Bet you, this was Bobby."

So, did they come up with a decision that it was indeed Bobby? Poor Bobby. He's not even present to defend himself :)

Back to the main plot here. The thing about free will is, we can choose. Sometimes, we make good choices. Sometimes, we make bad ones. When we are at crossroads, we can't help but be confused. Should I do this? Should I risk it? Maybe, it's better to take the safer route? Or will I just stall and wait?

Friend 1: "Who would you be with, out here, Jess?"

*Snow White song starts

I just got to say, Christina looked so BEAUTIFUL in her look below. The make-up is on point, as well as the hair. Props to the make-up artist and the hairstylist.

Did we get to see the whole dress that she was wearing? I wish we did. It's still okay though. It's not like not showing the whole dress will ruin the whole video.

The shots of her lying on the floor with eyes closed are giving me chills, to be honest. I almost want to skip those parts. I don't know about you though. That's probably just me.

The choreography is not over the top. I like that it's simple and quite interpretative, if not almost. I prefer that better. You want to incorporate the dance with the song itself. It would be bad if the dance took the center stage in this video. I'm glad that they really did a great job with this. It could easily mess up the quality of the whole video if they did wrong.

Another good thing to point out in this video is the fact that you could really see the emotion on Christina's face. She was definitely so into it. I can feel that just by watching it.

Did I mention how beautiful she looked in this video? Oh, yes. I believe I already did. Forgive me if I will say it again. I'm mind-blown.

The 'all is vanity" tattoo is visible. I appreciate the fact that they did not hide it just in case it would not fit her character. Along with her 2P tattoo, that's more Christina than Jessica. 

How many of us have decided to have the same tattoo as hers? As far as I know, I heard some frands who want to have it in honor of Christina. It would be weird if I have a tattoo of her name though. All is vanity is more appropriate but it maybe too long for me. Unfortunately, I am not a gamer like Christina. So, 2P is not even an option.

Back to regular programming...

Christina was not a girly-girl. She was really this cool.

I saw online that some people have foot fetish on Christina's. I wonder if some have hand fetish because you have to admit, she has beautiful hands. The same incredible hands that play the piano so effortlessly.

This is what it looks like when you do not lip sync as you are shooting your music video. You could see that she did belt those notes in that moment. Of course, she would. She really was a legit singer with such an amazing voice. We all know that Christina didn't lip sync ever. She didn't need to. I wish other singers would do the same. I guess that's a hopeless case though.

"There's only one and he's got the key. But we are two worlds apart."

I read in an article that the chorus of this song is 'haunting'. No matter where you see it, it certainly has that kind of effect. I hope that we don't associate it more with the fact that a different Prince saved her from harm in real life. Given what eventually happened to Christina, also considering that she wrote this herself, it was whom what we call the Prince of Peace. For Christians out there, you know who I'm talking about.

"Someday, my prince will come for me. Save me from this harm that haunts me." 

At this point in the video, it's either you already cried a ton watching it or you are about to.

"When will I be free? Tell me. Someday he will come, for me."

The story has been told well, so far. You can't help but wonder how this chapter is going to end and how it will connect to the next one.

A frand and YouTuber pointed out that the song ended with that shot above. She was very observant of every detail. I agree with her. The creativity with this video is refreshing.

I'm a poet. I love writing poems. So, I can be very deep. I use symbols or figures of speech. I admire this video much more because it really has such depth and meaning. Even just by watching it on the surface, especially with the regular viewers, you get it. You can grasp the message. To those who are more creative, artistic or poetic, you actually grasp it a little bit more. I understand that they had limited budget for the music videos but with the quality of this first video, I don't think that the lack of budget is obvious at all.

Christina nailed this. Dude, I would even bow down to my knees right now. I could totally see myself being in the same state too. 

I can't help but gush. This video is just pulling heartstrings here and there.

Friend 1: "Hey, you okay?"

Jessica: "Do you ever feel like everything you do is wrong? I’m gonna take off, okay?"

All of us can relate to that. 

The icing on the cake is this wisdom at the end of the video.

Friend 1: "Hey! Let your feet follow your heart, okay?"

That quote alone is enough for me to have this music video above Advice and Tell My Mama (I don't consider Must be Love as a legit music video because it's more lyrical), other than several more reasons.

Not that my opinion matters but, with this, my expectation is going to be higher for the next music video. I hope that the Anybody's You mv will measure up with this, if not even better,

My final thoughts. I LOVE this a lot. The relevance is a bonus. The quality is there. I admit that it was really difficult for me looking directly at the screen the whole time. If I did, I knew that I would shed a lot of tears. I lost it when I saw a video of a fellow frand who was crying while watching it. Since the release of this video, I got to watch it so many times. It's going to be on repeat, for sure. I treasure this, as well as the rest of her videos out there. 

You can't help but be emotional. You get the feels... the chills... It's as if your heart is breaking again. It's not as worse as two months ago though. 

Looking forward to another Grimmie Thursday. Don't disappoint, Anybody's You mv. I'll definitely let my feet follow my heart.
