Katy Perry’s PRISM Album Review
“I didn't want to have just club songs. People are living real lives, working jobs, having relationships. There's definitely a bit more substance and perspective on this record."
— Katy Perry, on the composition of the album.
Katy Perry
is one of the biggest names in the music industry nowadays. She already has
proven that by being the most followed female celebrity with at least 42
million Twitter followers and by making a history as the first female to have
five Billboard number one hits (California
Gurls, Teenage Dream, Firework, E.T. and Last Friday Night)
from one album, a record she lies behind no other than the legend, Michael
Jackson.
The famous
singer songwriter just released another successful album, Prism, which is constantly compared to her previous highly
acclaimed Teenage Dream (2010). Katy considers her new record as a lot darker
and more matured since she was going through her divorce when she started
working with Prism. For the Katy Cats
(her fans) and critics, there was great expectation. For her, there was extreme
pressure. With Roar reaching the number one spot, no one is surprise by this
feat. Now, were going to break down Prism. Is it going to be a hit or a miss?
Roar is the
first single. It has become an international anthem upon its release. This song
reminds me of Firework and Wide Awake.
“I got the eye of a tiger, a fighter,
dancing through the fire. ‘coz I am the champion and you’re gonna hear me roar.”
Aside from having a catchy tune, it is an inspirational and uplifting song. The
message it contains brings positivity to people that most songs lack right now.
By the Grace of God is the second
song in my list. It’s one of those Christian songs that have a modern and
unique take. Usually, these songs rarely become mainstream and really popular
but this might change that fact. “By the
grace of God, I pick myself back up. I put one foot in front of the other.”
What do
Unconditionally, It Takes Two and Spiritual have in common? Katy’s boyfriend and
fellow musician, John Mayer. The first two are about their relationship. The
last one is the song that he co-wrote. Katy revealed that her personal favorite
in the album is Unconditionally,
which became her second single. It has this eerie vibe that is good especially
at the beginning of the song. We get to hear her strong vocals, which is
appropriate for a powerful song. “I’ll
take your bad days with your good. Walk through the storm, I would. And do it
all because I love you.” What really make this stand out though are its
relatable lyrics about love. Basically, it says that the unconditional rare
kind of love means loving someone by embracing and accepting that person
despite of his flaws. The best parts of It
Takes Two are its fierce chorus and transition while Spiritual gives you sensual and gothic-like mood.
Dark Horse
and Ghost have dark lyrics but with
an interesting irony in its music. This
Moment, Walking on Air, Birthday, Love Me, International Smile,
Choose Your Battles, and This is How We Do are all mid to fast tempo potential hit songs
that are set to invade dance floors. The two love tracks Double Rainbow and Legendary
Lovers are actually enormous, critically speaking. Its composition is put
together perfectly. Double Rainbow has some similarities with Adele’s Skyfall,
which is an Oscar award-winning movie soundtrack. Legendary Lovers, on the
other hand, can be a theme song of possible film adaptations of William
Shakespeare renowned tragic masterpieces such as Romeo and Juliet.
If I’m going
to rate this album from 1 to 5 (lowest to highest), I’ll give it a 4.5 just
because I didn’t like one particular song in this album. It’s definitely a HIT.
